A Biodiversity Informatics Approach to Ethnobotany: Meta-analysis of Plant Use Patterns in Ecuador Ecology and Society
Balslev, Henrik; Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University; henrik.balslev@biology.au.dk; Borchsenius, Finn; Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University; finn.borchsenius@biology.au.dk.
We explored the relative importance of ecosystem diversity, socioeconomic, environmental, and geographical factors in determining the pattern and diversity of people’s plant use in Ecuador, based on existing ethnobotanic investigations and a large database of georeferenced plant collections. For each of 40 communities, we determined the number of plants used and their distribution among 12 use categories. Plant species richness of the ecosystem surrounding each village was determined using herbarium data and rarefaction. Variation in socioeconomic, environmental, and geographical indicator variables at the community level was summarized using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Data were then analyzed using multiple regression and ordination...

Interaction of strains of non-toxigenic Aspergillus flavus with Aspergillus parasiticus on aflatoxin production Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
MARTINS,Hermínia Marina; MARTINS,Maria Lígia; BERNARDO,Fernando Almeida.
Aflatoxins production is affected by abiotic, biotic and genetic parameters. Eugenesic and dysgenetic condition for aflatoxinogenesis are relatively well studied, such as: the influence of temperature, pH, Aw, Oxigen tension, osmotic pression, organic and inorganic nutrients, substance with fungistatic effects: however there are relatively few knowledge about endogenous regulator mechanisms, the kinetic of the anabolism and the interaction between the productive moulds and remaining microflora holding in eutrophying substrates. The main objective of this study is to evaluate biotic interaction between five indigenous strains of A. flavus, confirmed non-toxigenic, and a productive strain (A. parasiticus ATCC 15 517), cultured simultaneously on two...

Phenological relationships between two insect galls and their host plants: Aspidosperma australe and A. spruceanum (Apocynaceae) Acta Botanica
Campos,Priscila Tolentino; Costa,Maria Cecília Dias; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos; Moreira,Ana Sílvia Franco Pinheiro; Oliveira,Denis Coelho de; Lemos-Filho,José Pires de.
Although gall diversity in the Neotropical region is immense, comparative studies on the phenology of host plants and their galls are scarce. Gall systems generally require high levels of phenological synchrony between the associated organisms. The relationships between the phenology of two leaf galls induced by an unidentified Cecidomyiidae in Aspidosperma spruceanum Benth. ex Müell. Arg. and by Pseudophacopteron sp. in A. australe Müell. Arg. were investigated. The investigation was performed on ten individuals per species in 15-day intervals taking into consideration the percentage of galled leaves. In a one-year study, three distinct phenophases for the leaf galls and four phenophases for host plants were observed. The maximum percentage of leaf galls...
